Types of EV explained

"EV" covers three kinds of vehicle. Here is how each one works, in plain language.

HEV

Hybrid electric vehicle · Hybrid

A petrol engine works with an electric motor and a small battery. The battery charges itself as you drive and brake, so you never plug in.

Good to know
Uses less fuel than a petrol-only car, especially around town. Refuel as normal.
Charging
Never needs charging.

PHEV

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle · Plug-in hybrid

A larger battery you charge from a power point or charger, plus a petrol engine. Many everyday trips can be driven on electricity alone.

Good to know
Electric driving for daily trips, with the petrol engine ready for longer journeys.
Charging
Plug in at home or at a charger. It still drives as a hybrid when the battery is used.
